Why the Island of Bohol in the Philippines?

Terrible things are happening around the world. War, disease, extreme poverty, the list goes on. We could not possibly help everyone, and with these massive problems, how much of a difference could we really make?

We believe that we can still make a difference by focusing on things that we can do well.

We believe we are good at what we do for the following reasons:

  • We know the island very well.

From the start, this organisation was formed by people who originally come from the island of Bohol or are very familiar with the place. We know the island really well, its people, its culture and traditions, and its problems. We know how things work on the island.
We are careful with your money, and knowing how the 'system' works, we are in a good way 'street smart' in our business dealings with people.

  • We have real life experience in the fields of education and the building industry - the two areas we are doing our work.

Josefina 'Inday' Alas runs our education project. She has more than 20 years of teaching experience and teaches at The University of Bohol on the island. She knows the education system, gives valuable advice, and keeps a good eye on our students' progress.
Ruben Mendez runs our housing and skills training projects. Ruben has worked in the building industry for more than 30 years and has the technical backing of Birzulis Associates Pty. Ltd., a structural engineering consulting firm in Sydney where he works. He was in the Philippines to start the building of the houses and has organised a team that has become very efficient at what they do.

  • We know what we are about because most of us know how it is to be poor.
